I've never read Harry Potter either. It never appealed to me. I did listen to some of them on tape. I know I could never read them. The writing style is so . . . weird . . .
I lost interest very quickly. Just not for me I guess. I kept up with the story to an extent, keeping up with spoilers and junk. And then I found out in the last book she kills off my favorite character. (Spoiler) Snape. Rude! I love Snape! So now I see no reason to read them.
I don't really care for Harry Potter but I don't exactly dislike them. But this is not the case for the Lord of the Rings series. I HATE THEM. Before the movies came out, my dad had the great idea of reading The Hobbit to us so we would know what was going on. I absolutely hated that book. It all seemed so pointless and long. And the writing style was just right out annoying. It would be talking about something like it was a secret, but then just come right out and tell you what it was. Ugh!
Since I hated the book, I didn't want to see the movies. I got drug along to see them with my family though. All three of them. I hated them too. When I wanted to know what was going on with Froddo or Frollo or whatever his name was, it was showing Legalas or whatever and his group. When I wanted to check in on Legalas's group, we were with Froddo! It was aggrivating! And it was all dark and stuff would get quiet with only music which drove me nuts . . .
Sure, I may have just decided before I saw them that I would hate them, but it doesn't change the fact that I do.
. . . What was this thread about again? Oh yeah. Books we LIKE.
Uh . . . I did remember there are some books I do read. I read the Monk books. Based off the TV series by the same name. The TV show is funnier and there are some inconsistancies here and there, but they aren't too bad.
